Before searching Sumter County court records, decide which office is likely to keep the file. Common Pleas civil records, General Sessions criminal records, judgments, and final divorce decrees are Clerk of Court records. Family Court handles divorce, custody, support, juvenile, and domestic matters. Probate Court has its own search path for estates, guardianships, conservatorships, trusts, commitments, and marriage licenses. Summary Court and Municipal Court are the practical route for traffic tickets, magistrate misdemeanors, warrants, bonds, evictions, and small civil claims.

2. Read the Sumter County disclaimer and click Accept to continue into the Public Index search screen.
3. Complete the Security Check by typing the code and clicking Validate. The official user guide notes that pressing Enter does not validate the code.
4. Search by case number, name, action type, date type and range, tax map number, court type, court agency, case type, subtype, party, Lis Pendens, or judgment filters when those fields fit the record.
5. Open the case number from the results, review enabled tabs such as actions or financials, use Switch View for a one-screen display, and check document icons only when the case provides images.

Probate Court handles estates, marriage licenses, guardianships, conservatorships, commitments, trusts, and related probate case files. Summary Court and Municipal Court handle traffic, warrants, bonds, preliminary hearings, magistrate-level misdemeanors, evictions, small civil cases, and city ordinance matters.

That separate probate channel is why estate status, appointment dates, and creditor-claim deadlines should be checked in the probate system rather than only in Public Index.

Sumter County Court Records Access Channels

Official access is split across several channels. Public Index covers many Circuit, Magistrate, and Municipal records as available. Court rosters show calendar and term information. The Family Court scheduled-hearings portal is the hearing-schedule path for family matters. Probate Search is the search path for probate cases. The Traffic Ticket Search covers Summary Court traffic tickets and some municipal matters. C-Track covers appellate public access for the Court of Appeals and Supreme Court.

C-Track is not a substitute for the Sumter Public Index, but it matters when a local case has moved into an appellate court.

Public Access Laws for Sumter County Court Records

South Carolina public access law starts with S.C. Code Section 30-4-30, which allows public records to be inspected or copied unless an exemption or other law applies. The same Freedom of Information Act chapter defines public records broadly and recognizes exemptions for privacy, law-enforcement harm, attorney-client or work-product material, and records closed by other law. Court records also follow court rules, not just agency FOIA rules.

Rule 41.1, SCRCP treats court records as open unless a sealing rule or order applies after the required balancing process. Rule 41.2, SCRCP requires redaction of protected identifiers, including Social Security numbers, taxpayer IDs, driver or passport numbers, financial account data, protected addresses, and certain birth-date or minor details. For criminal expungement, S.C. Code Section 17-22-910 routes eligible applications through the circuit solicitor.

Restricted Sumter County Court Records

Several Sumter County court record categories are not fully public. Juvenile records are confidential under South Carolina juvenile-record statutes, and Family Court handles juvenile crimes and other sensitive family matters. Adoption files are restricted. Family-sensitive filings may be limited when they involve children, custody, private finances, or protected personal details. Probate mental-health and involuntary-commitment records should be treated as sensitive unless Probate Court confirms access.

Sealed court records do not appear in ordinary public portals in full. Rule 41.1 requires a court process before sealing, and a person who needs access to a sealed case must follow the court's order or motion process rather than relying on a website. Expunged criminal records also require care. In the Third Judicial Circuit, the Sumter County Solicitor's Office administers expungement applications for eligible criminal-record categories, and Public Index visibility should be checked only after the controlling expungement process is complete.

Certified Sumter County Court Records

Certified copies and records that are not complete online should be requested from the office of record. The Clerk's Office is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the main phone number is 803-436-2227. The Clerk charges $10 for certified copies of sentence sheets and similar General Sessions records. Certified copies of final divorce decrees, separation agreements, and divorce proceedings are also $10, and the request must be made in writing or in person. Telephone requests are not accepted for certified divorce copies. General Sessions fine payments are cash or money order only, with no personal checks. Traffic Court and tickets go to Summary Court, marriage licenses go to Probate Court, child-support information goes to Family Court, and deeds, land transactions, and tax liens go to the Register of Deeds.
